Quick answer

What Should Hindu Wedding Invitation Wording Include?

Hindu wedding invitation wording should include: a Ganesh invocation (“॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥”), the hosts' names with proper titles (Shri/Smt.), the bride's and groom's names with their parents, the date, muhurat time and venue of each function, and a closing blessing. Phrases like “Shubh Vivah” or “Vivah Sanskar” and a bilingual Hindi–English format give it a traditional feel. The samples below are ready to copy into a card or a digital Hindu wedding invitation.

Hindu Wedding Invitation Wording: Dos and Don'ts

Do's

  • Start with a Ganesh Ji invocation or the Om symbol
  • Mention parents' names with respect (Mr./Mrs. or Shri/Smt.)
  • Include the exact date, time and venue address of each function
  • Add a Google Maps link so guests can find the venue
  • Proofread for spelling errors — more than once
  • Include a contact number for confirmations
  • Use correct Hindi matras (मात्रा) if you write in Devanagari
  • Mention if it's a traditional Vedic ceremony

Don'ts

  • Don't write the whole invitation in ALL CAPS
  • Avoid mixing too many fonts on a printed card (three at most)
  • Don't overcomplicate — keep it clear and readable
  • Avoid informal abbreviations (write “April”, not “Apr”)
  • Don't forget AM or PM after each time
  • Avoid negative phrasing (“No gifts please” can sound abrupt)
  • Don't use slang or overly casual language in formal invitations
  • Never skip proofreading — typos in names are hard to forgive

Final checklist before you send

  • Ganesh invocation present?
  • Names spelled correctly — couple and both families?
  • Date and time accurate for every function?
  • Venue address complete?
  • Contact number added?
  • Google Maps link opens the right venue?
  • Hindi text proofread?
  • Has someone else read it too?

Frequently asked questions

  • Start with a religious invocation such as “Om Sri Ganeshaya Namah” or a Sanskrit shloka, then name the hosts (“Mr. & Mrs. [Father's name] request the honour of your presence at the wedding of their daughter/son”), the bride and groom with their parents, the date, time and venue of each function with the full address, and close with a blessing such as “Your presence will be our greatest blessing.” Use formal titles like Shri, Smt., Mr. and Mrs.

  • Use whatever suits your family and guests: English for urban and NRI guests, Hindi for traditional families, a bilingual Hindi–English format for mixed audiences, or a Sanskrit shloka with an English translation. Many couples choose English with a shloka at the top. On Shaadi Invitation you can type your messages in Hindi, English or a mix of both.

  • Popular choices include “Om Sri Ganeshaya Namah” (invoking Lord Ganesha), the Ganesh Vandana “Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha”, “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah” and verses from the wedding vows. Add a short translation for guests who don't read Sanskrit.

  • Use this format: “With the blessings of Lord Ganesha, Mr. & Mrs. [Father's full name] request the honour of your presence at the wedding ceremony of their beloved daughter [Bride's full name] with [Groom's full name], son of Mr. & Mrs. [Groom's father's name]. Wedding Ceremony: [Date, Time, Venue]. Your presence will be our greatest blessing.” The hosts' names always come first.

  • Yes. A warm, casual tone works well, for example: “Two families, one love story. Join us as [Bride] & [Groom] tie the knot! With blessings from our parents, we invite you to our wedding on [Date] at [Venue].” Keep one traditional element, such as a blessing or shloka, to respect custom.

  • They are traditional closing headings on Hindi wedding cards. दर्शनाभिलाषी (darshanabhilashi, “eager to see you”) is followed by the names of family members who look forward to your presence, and स्वागतोत्सुक (swagatotsuk, “eager to welcome you”) by the relatives who will receive the guests.
